obviously there is no fixed rule about how complete the reset is, and
certainly hitting the head of a drum that is already oscillating will
cause the production of a different sound than hitting one that was at
rest. nevertheless, its still the case that in some fairly deep sense,
the voice *is* reset, and a new note is played from the top. the same
is true on the piano for example.
